ShmuliPhoto’s faves of the year.

Best Album: Taamu - Benny Friedman. The best album goes to Benny, who for sure lived up to the hype that came along with the pre-release of his debut album. I have seen Benny sing years ago when I was in Yeshiva inTzafed, where he used to copy his uncle Avraham Fried, but in his new alum he takes the familiarity we have with Avraham Fried mixes it with his own personality, and voila, an amazing album!

Best Song: Letova – Benny Friedman. Although I love the other songs in this selection, and I do think that the Vehi She’amda is an amazing song (and maybe I would have picked that song over this one if not for…) but with the Letova track I feel more of a connection. this connection could also be because I have gotten to know Benny with his amazing personality.

Best Debut Album: Taamu – Benny Friedman. Well, this one should be obvious from my two previous picks… but my second pick would be Berry Weber’s Be’ezras Hashem, which is also a solid album. And #3 would be going to Shloime Taussig’s debut album.

Best Arrangement: skipping this one if you don’t mind ;)

Boys Choir Album: Kol Noar Boys Choir. This was an amazingly refreshing new album, that has brought many new styles to Jewish music. Mo Kiss Did an amazing job to give us a fresh choir. I look forward to a new album from this choir.

Best Yiddish Song: Emes – Benny Friedman. A song that has great happy rhythm that you don’t hear that often in Yiddish songs. When I heard that there was going to be a Yiddish song on Benny’s album, I was thinking that we’re getting an other slow song, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this song, that has a great message for life.

Best Concert DVD: I’m not a big fan of watching a concert on DVD, since it is very hard to capture the feel of a live concert on video, however it can bring back a memory from being at a concert, therefore I will not select a favorite. I was present at The Big E’vent, but dont think the DVD brings back the same feel of being there, becuase it was the crowd that brought that atmosphere.

(The JMR staff would like to give a big thanks to ShmuliPhoto for taking the amazing pictures. Welcome to the team, Shmuli!)

See all the photos and our live twitter feed of the event here.

Report by JewishMusicReporter Pictures by ShmuliPhoto

One of the most popular concerts last summer was the brand new Kumzits on the Hudson. Actually, there were two of them last summer and not only did they feature some well known talent such as Yeedle, Yehuda Green but they also served as an introduction to many of the next generation of singers, featuring debut performances from Berry Weber, Shloime Taussig, Yisroel Werdyger and Benny Friedman. The first three have all come out with amazing debut albums and Benny’s album is due out very soon!

This year we heard some of the same wonderful new singers, plus a couple of even newer ones.

Here is a short recap of the night:

Michoel Schnitzler took the stage and warmed up the crowd with thank yous, introductions and, of course, his trademark humor.

The first singer of the night was a newcomer by the name of Shragy Gestetner, who has composed some beautiful songs that were featured on Shloime Daskal, Shloime Taussig, and Yisroel Werdyger’s CD’s. His first song was quite an impressive feat for an up and coming singer, as he took on Avraham Fried’s Ki Hamitzvah from the Aderaba album. He did a beautiful job, showcasing some really excellent vocals. Shragy followed up with a beautiful rendition of Yossi Green’s uber hit, Anovim.

Next up wasYoily Folkowitz, a relative newcomer to scene. He jumped right into it with Yossi Green’s first recorded composition, Kol Berama, the same song that Shloime Taussig started off with last year, and what a year it’s been for Shloime ever since! Im Yirtze Hashem, we wish Yoily the same Hatzlacha! Next, Yoily sang another Yossi Green song, Kanei, from the 8th Note. To take on a song that Chazzan Helfgot himself sang was quite ambitious, but I can tell you now, it was beautiful! Yoily really took on the song and sang it with so much heart. He especially nailed it at the end with some unheard of notes!

At this point the crowd was seriously pumped up, and Sruly Werdyger took the stage and started off with Emor. Sruly is another singer who debuted on the boat last year, and he has shown some amazing growth in such a short period of time. While he was also incredible last year, this year’s performance proved he has graduated to a whole new level. Let me also say that an incredible Yasher Koach has to go out to all the musicians: Music by Dovi Tessler, Yoli Brach, Zisha Glauber & Yoli W. Not only were the atmosphere, the company and the singers all amazing, but the music was extremely professional and sounded great. It added so much to the night. Next, Sruly sang Shragy Gestetner’s Keil HaKovod, followed by a really heartwarming Acheinu (from his CD). After that he sang a medley of songs which started off with Lipa’s composition Kivini, then Motti Illowitz’s Bayis Neman (the title track on Sruly’s album) and finally Yossi Green’s Hessach Hadas.

It was now Shloime Taussig’s turn to rock the boat and he didn’t disappoint. The crowd was already begging for Yehi Yehi Yehi and Shloime really deliver. He was really on fire, and the popular track off Shloime’s debut album was the perfect beginning for his set. After this Shloime spoke a little bit and gave shout outs to Benny Friedman and Shloime Dachs who were also in attendance (but didn’t sing.) Next, the crowd started singing Modim Anachnu, but Shloime made them wait for it, launching instead into Hareini Mezamin, from his album. At this point in the set Shloime thanks all the Jewish music websites (you’re welcome, Shloime!!) and also gave a big thanks to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook for helping him promote his album!! Very funny Shloime, you might just be a Badchen yet! By now, the crowd could not be contained. They are going to sing Modim Anachnu, with or without Shloime. Thankfully Shloime joined in and we get a wonderful version of Shloime’s title track, composed by Yossi Green (seeing a theme?). Then he closed the set by singing Lipa’s Hallelu.

Finally, the headliner takes the stage: Yehuda Green with the Zutler band. At this point in time, the crowd was very pumped up and Yehuda came out singing Shlomo Carlebach’s L’maan Achai. Yehuda closed the night with many more beautiful songs from R’ Shlomo, but even more exciting was the fact that Yehuda played many of his own beautiful new songs. Yehuda is currently working on his long awaited follow up album to the smash hit, Land of Your Soul. He carried home the night and excited the crowd with his beautiful style. As the boat docked back at Pier 17 everyone was in high spirits and already asking “When is the next one??”

Of course the Jewish Music Report will have all the details on the next Kumzits, and we’ll be there to report on it. If we could just give you a little piece of advice, don’t wait for the report the next day, join us next time on the boat and enjoy it with us. This concert series is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced in Jewish music. As amazing as the large scale concerts are, nothing compares to the heart, the soul, the warm, up-close interaction with the singers as the Kumzits on the Hudson. When you are on this boat you are made to feel like just one of the guys. It’s a night out with friends who happen to also be some of the most talented and up and coming rising stars in the world of Jewish Music.

A huge Yasher Koach to everyone who made this night possible: Yossi Tyberg and Gershy Moskowitz of TeeM Productions, the musicians, the singers and, of course, you, for following us on Twitter and Facebook and visiting the website.

Only recently I realized where I had seen Beri before. I found a video of last year’s Kumzits on The Hudson where Beri sings very lebedik, and I remember thinking “I hope this guy comes out with an album”. He has such Chayus and Freilachkeit in the way he sings his songs. It is very soul warming, I’m glad to see a beautiful product. It was worth the wait.

I’m sure you will hear people say, he sounds like Lipa, he sounds like Shloimi Gertner, but the truth is, he sounds like Beri and Beri only. You might hear a bit of another singer when you hear the CD at first or maybe second time around, but once you have heard this album several times you come to realize that Beri has his own style and I can see him becoming the next big thing. (Any one for a Bigger Event? Beri, Lipa, Gernter, MBD, Dedi… ok, I’m just dreaming here, but it would be nice!)

Lately we have seen several new Chassidishe singers, starting with the trend setter Lipa. Many have followed, just to name a few: Shloime Gertner, Shlomie Daskal, Yisroel Werdyger, Yossi Mayer, Shloime Taussig. They have added a lot to the Jewish music market and have all put out amazing CDs with great quality music and songs. Looks like there are some more stars rising. There is place for you all, hop on in! We are all thirsty for good quality Simcha.

Let’s start going through the songs, I am not a fan of rating a song in *stars*, so I will just go through track by track writing my thoughts about that song, I will leave the rating to each and every one of you, readers. Hold on tight, you’re in for a good ride.

Be’ezras Hahem – The title song sets a nice beat to this album. A song composed by Beri himself, music arranged by Naftuli Mendlowitz. This song has a very pleasant yet up beat tune. The children’s choir is very well mastered by Eli Gerstner & Yossi Neuman, not to forget the harmony throughout the song by the Shira Choir, where Beri himself is also part of, performing all over (chabad telethon, Miami, London among other places). It’s not the song with the most words in it, but still a good song. A nice Touch in the booklet is where you can see Beri writing B’H on the top of a vintage looking letter. (I’m guessing that is what it’s supposed to be.)

Chayim – Just to keep the beat up a bit here you have another fast song. This song has a very nice musical arrangement, by no other than MONA himself. One musical feature that has to be put in the spotlight is the piano played by Yaron Gutfried, it is skillfully integrated into the song, and it can be heard at 1:45 very nicely. This song has the Chayus to it, to live up to it’s lyrics “Gedolo Torah Shenosenes Chaim” (Great is the Torah that gives Life).

Avinoo – Here we slide into the slow lane. I like the way this song goes from the low part to the high part – it’s beautifully done. Beri’s vocals also sound very good in both parts. The song is a bit on the longer side, just over 6 minutes. I know the song is composed by Lipa, and yes it is a good song, but it will just not qualify as the best song.

Rekidale – The tunes and the lyrics are a very good match again, a very Freilach song composed by Motty Ilowitz. Motty is having an immense impact on Jewish music, with great lyrics and songs that he has composed and written for various singers. I have also heard him sing himself very nicely (I wonder if he is coming out with an album himself). Nice Saxophone solo @3:45 followed by some Shtick that ends the song very nicely.

Shabbos Hi – A very Hartzige Song Composed by Aron Y. Spilman with beautiful lyrics by Motty Ilowitz. The Piano starting of this touching melodious tune then blending with the violin begins this childs story. The child soloist in the beginning of this song gives a great emotional touch, as if you are hearing the story from the one it is happening to. The Child asks “Ven Hob ich shoin a Refia” (When will I have a recovery) and the child is answered “Vein Nish tei’er Kind, Di Vest IY”H Zein Gezint” (don’t cry dear child, you will IYH be well). From there the song goes on to ask from the almighty “Tate” that Klal Yisroel is waiting for the ultimate Yeshua. The choir ads a very nice and soft touch to the song. “Gut shabbos Alle Yidishe Kinder Un A refia Sheleima” with the Yom Shekulo Shabbos – Omein.

Der Weiber – (that is how I would spell it not “Der Vaiber”) Der Weiber is hands down my favorite song on this album, it has the modern beat that you can find yourself singing along to. This Song has Lipa all over it and I’m loving it. I heard Lipa on the JM in the AM when Beri was being interviewed by Nachum Segal, Lipa said that he could have used this song for his own album as “Ver is de Schmelter” (who is the welder) which is also mentioned in the same Tefila of Yom Kippur. Who knows maybe one day we will hear the Lipa Version of the song. The arrangement by Shai Bachar is amazing to say the least.
The picture in the booklet of Beri, weaving with great concentration is hilarious. Here I will also mention the quality of the booklet that comes along, when you buy the CD (or download). Every track has an other picture of Beri doing something related to each song.
We have seen several artists now that have name related songs, and I think that is a very cute touch. We have heard it in Legabay by Dovid Gabay, R’ Mayer Omer by Yossi Mayer and Pruzbul by Michoel Pruzansky. It’s nice to see how they reference their name to a Torah source.

Vhaarev Nu The song starts off with a childrens choir. To me the message is, we have to teach our children the Torah in order to keep the Torah’s flame alive. A very nice flowing song, not a slow song, but then again I would not call this a very fast song either. Maybe this song was placed after “Der Weiber” to just calm you down a bit after such a great song. At the songs end we get right into the learning “Tuni Rabunon, Huben Rabunon Gelerent”.
Just an observation: The picture in the booklet could have used different glasses (from the Weber photo shoot), you could have borrowed Lipa’s!

Yehi Rutzoin Here is a piece of the Selichos Davening, where we ask Hashem to hear our crying voice and save us from all evil. The start of the song has a bit of a Shofar sounds to it, but from what I can make it out to be, it is a trumpet. This tune is for sure to give you the Slichos feeling.

Hinei Put the volume up! We have some Sephardi style music (Mit a Yidishe Ta’am) to get you up on your feet. We are entering a new week, and we know for sure we will have one filled with good and Mazal.Check out 2:13, now that is some talent! @2:48 we hear the choir cheering on, Kumzits style! I had to play this song again, I was not done with my dance, so here we go again “Siman Tov Umazal tov” (as I’m writing this review it’s Motzei Shabbos, putting me in a good mood!)

Chazak In this song you can hear how soft Beri’s voice is. The choir does their job very well, but the song itself is not one of the better ones of this album, you will always have songs that are not bad at all, but they are not what make this album special. A filler if I may say, but a good one.

Beiloikim This song got its earlier release in the music video that was brought out. I’m not the biggest fan of the music video itself, but the tune is a good one. The music is full of energy, boosted up with some electric “auto tuning” that gives the song a very modern and up to date feeling. @ 3:20 we take the song up one notch, after that the sax shows us again what it has in store, with just another great solo.

Ten Be At 2:45 Beri tells the story of the “Heilige Maharam Shif” how he begged Hashem for the strength to be able to learn Torah, and he grew to be the Holy Maharm Shif. So too, when we are in a difficult situation, we should call out to our “Tatte” to give us Koach. I like the way the story is integrated into the song, the music keeps playing and you can hear the choir in the background, and what I like most is how Beri ends off the story with the “TATTE” that gets you right back into the song. I’m usually not the biggest fan of story-time during songs, but it is so “Beri” well done that that I was drawn right in.

Mi Mi Mi A very catchy tune, that could easily get stuck in your head. Its nice to see the choir joined by some children, not your usual choir. At 2:44 you will hear other “auto-tuning” well done.

Jerusalem Our Home This song is composed by Beri himself and is a very relaxing way to end a good album. Beri has said this to be his favorite song (on the Nachum Segal Show). It starts of without any words but just a sort of Nigun. A 2:40 the words star trickling in “Aheim villen mir gein” (No more crying, Tzaros should all disappear, we want to go home, build our house in Jerusalem, with a smile we’ll walk around.)

Overview: If you do not have this album yet, get up and run to the store to get a copy of this Album, or better, don’t get up, Just get the download version from MostlyMusic.com and save yourself a couple of dollars.

This past Friday the sad news came to us about the passing of a very well known Jewish Music Star, Jo Amar.

Although I am not old enough to have grown up with Jo as one of my major Jewish Music Stars, he was still able to get his way into my life, and sure make me remember one of the biggest hits “Barcelona”. Every once a while when me or my friends pulled up the oldies, Jo Amar was sure not to be missed, and he was always enjoyed very much. We all tried to sing along with his energetic songs, until it got too high, or we got out of breath :). His song “Shalom Leben Dodi” has come around many times at a Shabbos Table when there was a request for that song, it always added that warm touch to the meal.

Below is the Jpost article about Jo Amar’s Passing

“World renowned Moroccan singer Yosef “Jo” Amar passed away in New York on Friday. He was 79 years old.

Amar was an Israeli icon during the early years of the state, a favorite of the newly arrived Sephardic immigrants.

Amar immigrated to Israel in 1956. He pioneered the fusion of classical Jewish Sephardic and Arabic tunes with Western musical sensibilities, thereby helping give birth to the style labeled Mizrahi music today.

The lyrics usually discussed the personal and social angst and joys of Middle Eastern immigrants who sought to find a place in Israeli society. Amar was also a highly-regarded cantor.

The casket of Amar, who recently joined his children in the United States, was brought to Israel Saturday night. His funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at Yad Rambam, the moshav where he stayed on visits to Israel in recent years.

Amar made aliya in 1956, but later left Israel and divided his time between Europe and the United States. However, he continued to visit Israel to perform.

After the death of his wife Remond, Amar returned to Israel. He was wheelchair-bound after having suffered a stroke in 2000, and two years ago, suffered a second stroke, which worsened the condition of his Parkinson’s disease, from which he also suffered at a late age.”

We at the JMR would like to welcome a brand new writer into the family. The Jewish Music Report welcomes Shmuli. Shmuli will be helping us with many exciting things, and we are confident you will enjoy both his style and passion for music.

Shlomo Simcha – Aneni (1999)

This album came out when I was in Yeshiva in Israel, as all songs, they bring back great memories of good old times. I used to listen to this album over and over on my Mini Disc Player (yup! I had one of those…) on public transportation travels and free time.

I have to mention that this album is the first time I saw a CD with a “cut-out” around the hands, pretty cool. I never had this album on CD myself so I’m not sure, can this CD be played in all players or do some players have trouble with the cut-out?

I do not have all the credits of all the songs, so forgive me for not mentioning anything about the composers or arrangers. Lets go through the tracks of the last great CD that Shlomo Simcha came out with (“Made in Canada” CD was all right but nothing compared to Aneni).

Aneni
A great starter song! It starts off real slow with a begging voice “Ki Kavonosi” where I can feel the meaning of the words in the almost emotional way it’s being sang. And then the song comes to life after 45 seconds with a good beat. The choir is a great addition to this song, the harmony and little Shtik they do (oowa ooowa oowa) gives this song a special touch. Nice saxophone piece a 4:00. To me, this song was a hit and it sets a great tone for the rest of the album.

Nishba
A Very Hartzige song where you can hear the power and control of Shlomo Simcha’s vocals. This is a very relaxing song with a very nice combination of violin, piano and saxophone for the perfect relaxation.

Sholom Alechem
Yet again we are starting a fast song with a slow beginning just like the title song Aneni. Every once in a while at my Shabbos table I sing all different Sholom Alechems for each part a different song (reminds me of my days in camp) and this song is almost always present at those fun times. The only part that doesn’t always fit is the “Shabbos Sholom, Umevoroch” but for that we have to improvise a bit. All together a very happy and upbeat song, with a nice and slow ending.

Ki Lecho
We are in for an other fast song, this time we are getting right into it. I’m not the greatest fan of the filling “na na na” words, I rather have words fill up the whole song, but in this song it fits actually quite well. The Choir here is doing a great job again at harmonizing and making this song complete.

Al Kein Tzion
This song is a bit of a Tisha B’av Song, there is not much to write about this song, on to the next if you don’t mind.

Vayeisei
Here we have a bit more happiness, a good beat, electric guitar, some horns, the works. This one will get you on your feet. @ 2:17 we take it up a notch (always like that), but the song is over before you know it. Its the shortest song of this album at 3:30. In the Jewish music industry the average song is more in the 4-5 minute range.

Ohr Chodosh
And the fast songs keep coming. Or Chodosh is a great sing along song. I know I’m talking about the choir again, but they are really good in this song, spot on.

Am I the only one that finds the “fade-out ending” a bit cheap? I mean, couldn’t you come up with a nice ending to the song? did you have to fade it? and on top of that there is a guitar solo at the end that you can not hear clearly because it is fading out. I know its a common practice, still doesn’t make me like it…

Ad Heno
We are back on the slow track. An OK song, but not one that i have heard at a Shabbos table or a Kumzits. I’m missing the choir here at the end of the song, no more choir after 2:42, I just hear a bit of choir right before the end.

Shiro
Now we have a song that is here to make up what you where missing in the last song, I love it when there is some Yiddish mixed into a song when its well done, this one falls into that category. He might have been able to do a 4 language song, as Shlomo Simcha has done in his previous albums, this would have been the perfect song to do it, but the song is great without it as well. In this song I can feel the meaning of the words again, the joy and happiness is all over this song. and this song must be said has a very nice ending to it.

Tsur Misheloi
A great Shabbos table song. It has got a great flow to it. I have sang it several times at our Shabbos table (although it is not our Minhag to sing Zemiros) it is a very Geshmake tune with a lovely high part at 4:40.

Besheim Hashem
This song has become one of my favorite songs on this album, it was on repeat many times. A great song for the Meal time of a wedding or dinner. Back in my Yeshiva days we had a staircase with great acoustics where I could be heard ever once a while, this was one of the songs I loved to sing there.
