PHOTOS BY BARUCH EZAGUI

The Tzivos Hashem ‘Jewish Kids Got Talent’ competition drew to a close yesterday at the Tzivos Hashem dinner which took place at the Hilton New York. The highlight of the beautiful dinner, attended by over 400 supporters was the presentations made by each of the nine finalists.

The evening marked 31 years since the Lubavitcher Rebbe started the Jewish children’s organization. 31 years of hard work, and devotion, to Jewish children worldwide through clubs, rallies, countless publications, and craft workshops. The competition was yet again a resounding success and a wonderful way to commemorate the accomplishments of Tzivos Hashem, and a promise to never give up and to strive to do better and provide for future generations of Jewish children.

The atmosphere was electric as the house lights faded and the hall fell silent, a voice over the loudspeaker announced the beginning of the show and the hall erupted in cheers and applause. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening, comedian ‘Modi’ Rosenfeld, had the crowd roaring with laughter from the start.

The theme song, ‘Impact’, written by Moshe Kravitsky and performed by the Sparks Choir together with Moshe Hecht, was beautifully executed and the children performed to the highest standards. The words of the song highlighted the theme of the evening, ‘children have got the power to change the world’ by using their talents and doing good they can really make an impact ‘to bring Moshiach now.’ A new song, D’ Meir, featuring child vocalist Mendel Piekarski and special guest Yoni Zigelboum was also debuted by the Sparks Choir. The Sparks Choir, produced by Danny Finkleman will be releasing this song as a music video in the coming weeks.

Over the course of the evening, Jewish superstar Avraham Fried entertained the crowd accompanied by the fantastic Freilach Orchestra. Michelle Stern, the young violinist, and winner of last year’s performance category, was also a special guest at the evening and once again astounded the crowd with her violin skills. Accompanied by her mother, she had the audience on the edge of their seats and wide mouthed in awe as she played her piece.

Rabbi Yerachmiel Benjaminson, Executive Director of Tzivos Hashem, introduced new Chairman of the Board of Tzivos Hashem Yosef Yitzchok Popack who has been a friend and supporter of Tzivos Hashem since its initiation by the Rebbe 31 years ago. He has been an anchor of support to Rabbi Benjaminson throughout the years and has welcomed many distinguished guests to Tzivos Hashem during that time. Tzivos Hashem are honored that Yosef Yitzchok has accepted this role and look forward to his continued support as they work hard to take Tzivos Hashem forward into its 32nd year.

But the overall highlight of the evening, were the many talented children who graced the stage to show the audience what they are doing to make the world a better place. These children were the finalists of the ‘Jewish Kids Got Talent’ Competition, now in its second year. The finalists of the three competition categories, Chesed, Achievement, and Performing Arts showcased their talents and acts of kindness after which the guests had the chance to partake in a live vote via a handheld device available at each place at the dinner table.

Prizes up for grabs included cash for a non-profit organization of the winner’s choice, a sizable amount for themselves and a library of books from Kehot Publishing House.

After each of the finalists performed, the audience had the chance to ask them a couple of questions about their talent. Third place winner, five year old Chaya Mushka Moscowitz, wowed the crowd by reciting a paragraph taken from the chapter of Tanya she had mastered by heart. Chaya Mushkah was able to recite the lines flawlessly, much to the amazement of the crowd who cheered loudly.

Second place winners, brothers, Hersh Meyer and Moshe Ringel of Monsey NY impressed the audience with their project ‘Bottles for Books’. Over the past few months these boys have collected thousands of bottles and urged their family, friends and neighbors to do the same. Using the 5c deposit they get back after recycling them, the boys were able to raise enough money to purchase 41 books for the library at NYU. And their answer after being asked what they would do with their prize money? “Buy more books of course!”

The overall winner of this year’s competition was Malky Levy. Family Galprin from Israel moved to Cincinnati where Malky lives, to get treatment for their son who was tragically burnt in a terrible fire. Over the past year and a half, Malky has spent many hours with little Laizer, playing with him, reading to him, and just keeping him company while he undergoes treatment and recovers. The Galprin family appreciates the time Malky spends with him and say that she is a big part of his miraculous recovery. Malky will be donating her winnings to the Galprin’s to help with Laizer’s medical bills.

All the finalists were awarded prizes and certificates and Tzivos Hashem is very proud of all of them.

This wonderful event was produced by Danny Kaizler of ISRAevents and his team; it was a fabulous evening of performance and talent and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

A special thank you to media sponsor The Jewish Press, specifically Heshy Kornblit.

Singer Sholom Jacobs performed at Menorah lightings across Germany this Chanukah, joining Shluchim Yehuda Teichtal in Berlin, Chaim Barkahn in Dusseldorf and Rabbi Eliezer Chitrik in Nuremberg.

After several successful years of bringing Jewish music to Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States in honor of Chanukah, singer Sholom Jacobs continued his tradition of bringing music to Eastern Europe with three smash shows in the German cities of Berlin, Dusseldorf and Nuremberg.

“Each year I put together a tour in places that cannot afford big productions but have many Jews,” explained Sholom. “The Lubavitcher rebbe asked us to share the Jewish spark and bring out the pintela yid in every Jew. There is no greater way to do that than by bringing music and dancing to people in parts of the world that have been through so much.”

Sholom was joined on this tour by producer and accompanist Avram Zamist, and the two delighted hundreds of people at every venue, which were coordinated with the help of local Chabad shluchim, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal (Berlin), Rabbi Chaim Barkahn (Dusseldorf) and Rabbi Eliezer Chitrik (Nuremberg).

The first show, which took place on the first night of Chanukah, was held at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, transforming the exact spot Hitler used for his hate filled rallies into an oasis of Jewish pride as over 1,800 people braved the extreme cold to enjoy a rare taste of Jewish music. Among those in attendance were United States Ambassador Philip D. Murphy, Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Thierse, Berlin Senator for Urban Development Michael Müller and chairwoman of the Alliance ’90/The Greens Bundestag parliamentary group Renate Künast.

Over 500 people, attended the second night’s concert, held in the city’s main square. The third night of Chanuah featured an indoor concert in Nuremberg, attended by over 250 people. Despite the frigid temperatures, people stayed well into the night in all three cities, singing and dancing well into the night as the both the light of the menorah and the warmth and beauty of Jewish music captured the magic of Chanukah.

Upon his return to New York, Sholom had the distinct privilege of lighting the Chanukah menorah at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza, giving New Yorkers equal opportunity to enjoy Sholom’s unique style and melodious voice.

Chabad of the Valley’s Chanukah @ Citywalk celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The largest Chanukah celebration on the West Coast with thousands in attendance has become an annual fixture on the L.A. calendar. According to Rabbi Mayer Greene, the event’s emcee, the exciting concert and celebration had the participation of those who identify themselves as orthodox, conservative, reform or even unaffiliated Jews.

Event coordinators, Rabbi Yossi Baitelman of Chabad of Studio city and Rabbi Nachman Abend of Chabad of North Hollywood stated that on any given day, many thousands of people find themselves visiting CityWalk. This, on top of the multitudes that flocked there specifically for this event, truly fulfilled the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s directive of spreading the light of Chanukah to the masses. On Tuesday evening, the first night of Chanuka, Universal Studios CityWalk was transformed into a “Chanuka Wonderland” with a vast array of entertainment, face painters, arts and crafts, kosher food and a musical version of the story of Chanukah.

The onstage entertainment was highlighted by a rousing performance by renowned Chassidic singer Benny Friedman and dynamic sound of Pardes Rock. Other musical entertainment included a unique performance by The Mystic Sideshow, Israeli singer Eli Buzaglo and the amazing sight and sound of Kenny Ellis’s Chanukah Swings. “Our aim was to produce an evening filled with a diverse range of entertainment and talent appealing to people from all walks of life” stated Jonathan Herzog, one of the producers of the event.

Local dignitaries included Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yuraslovsky, Los Angeles City Councilmen Paul Koretz, Paul Kerkorian and Dennis Zine. Accompanied by Rabbi Yossi Malka, of Chabad of Encino, the President of Universal Studios Hollywood, Mr. Larry Kurzweil was on hand to officially welcome the crowd and light the beautiful silver Menorah.

Also on hand to address the crowd were the Executive Director of Chabad of California Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, Executive Director of Chabad of the Valley, Rabbi Yehoshua B. Gordon and the Associate Director of Chabad of the Valley, Rabbi Mordechai Einbinder.

The new stadium sized Jumbotron Astrovision screen, the focal point of CityWalk, displayed all of the live onstage entertainment as well as numerous video clips produced by Rabbi Ari Greene. The highlight of the day, however, clearly was when just prior to the lighting of the menorah, the Rebbe was shown on the giant screen singing Tzomo Lecho Nafshi. “To see a place like this so completely taken over by the light of Chanuka is truly the fulfillment of Pirsumei Nissa!” remarked Rabbi Yanky Kahn of Chabad of Tarzana.

Hundreds of students from all over the world have spent time learning in the Yeshiva, the Yeshiva now has over 100 students 10 of which are part of the smicha program which is celebrating it’s ninth year since inception.

As part of the tribute to the yeshiva, this year 2 of the biggest names in Jewish music today gave a mesmerizing performance, Superstars Avraham Fried & Lipa Schmeltzer appeared side by side in harmony accompanied by the Freilach band of NY, conducted by Mendy Hershkowitz.

“Our yeshiva in Sao Paulo is like an island of Torah and mitzvot” said the Dean and rosh yeshiva Rabbi Shamai Ende in his speech during
the event, Rabbi Ende also announced the opening of the yeshiva gedolah, with a group of eight students from Israel, as the conclusion of his remarks Rabbi Ende thanked all the donors and friends of the yeshiva.

” The activities of the yeshiva are not only within the chabad community, but also reaching out to all the broader communities and Jewish institutions in Brazil ” said Rabbi Mendy Koncepolski, Director of the yeshiva, “Our students and staff cater to the general community throughout the year spreading the light of Judaism in Sao Paulo and throughout Brazil, with the astounding crowd in attendance, it’s a real indication of the effect of the yeshiva and it’s students on the wider Jewish community.”

The event was Produced by Yaron Levy of Pearl Productions NY.

Aderet Music presents this video clip from the Shlomo Katz Double CD now in stores. Here is Shlomo to tell us the story behind this video.

“After a long journey, we finally landed in Melbourne. My wife Bina, ten month old Tiferet and myself. While waiting by the special cargo for my instrument, I met Harry who was waiting for his trumpet. We started talking, and mentioned that I have a show later in the week at the Phoenix Theater. Surprisingly, the guy shows up, armed with his trumpet. A friend tells me to call him up for a song and join us on one of my older niggunim. He joins us on stage and from the first note he creates magic, elevating the entire night to the next level.

After the show I see a line of people waiting for his autograph. Little did I know, this guest artist is part of one of the most popular and dynamic bands in Australia called ‘The Cat Empire’. Thank you Harry Angus.”
