Audio has been sent to JewishMusicReport.com that was taken of Avraham Fried singing a brand new song live at a recent apearance. On the audio Fried says the song was composed by Mendy Jerufi and will be featured on the all new CD. According to some reports we are hearing the new CD could be released within the next 4-6 weeks. Of course this is not confirmed. For those unsure, this is not the Hebrew album which was announced recently but an all new album with original songs in line with My Fellow Jew and Bein Kach.

This song feels like classic Fried to us, and allthough the quality of the audio is not great, you can get a good enough idea of the song. We’re sure you will be hearing a lot of in the months to come! We decided since permission wasn’t granted and a leaked copy of the song that ended up on YouTube was taken down, we will respectfully not post the audio.

Please note the above art is not official, and the original photo was taken by Baruch Ezagui. Are you excited for the official release!?

Michel Pardes is about to release his second album arranged by Avi Singolda. Michel Pardes who is also responsible for production, works with only “the top musicians in the Holy Land” in his words. “The hall of music is close to the hall of prayer, there is no room for compromise, only the best is good enough.”

Michel Pardes a businessman who travels the world, pops over to Israel in between deals to record singles that turn into albums. Shir Zion is the first single from Pardes’ second, marvelous album which is expected to be launched within the next few months. The song contains a wealth of Jewish optimism, bringing with it a breath of fresh air to the world of Jewish music. Listening to the tracks, one gets the impression that Pardes has come a long way, both in the level of production and in the complexity of the music. The album’s musical arrangement and creation is in the hands of Israel’s master guitarist, Avi Singolda. “Singolda is indeed an awesome guitarist…”, Pardes praises his colleague, “Hashem gave him a great gift”.

Working with Singolda has taught him what a professional really is, he is ‘passionate’, humorous and endlessly talented. “I hope that the amazing connection formed by our working together will pave a way to the hearts of the listeners.”

Unti recently, Pardes played with a modest band at simchas throughout Europe. Pardes, himself a pianist, studied at a music academy in Brussels. “Composing music is spiritual work”, says Pardes “the part of me which is closest to Hashem. My soul needs to sing in order to exist and to fill my heart with good. The music which I write makes me feel good.” The timbre of his voice, singing and musical style which are unique to Pardes contribute to create an inspiring experience and enable one to connect to the verses, to gain an understanding of them and to reflect upon the words that one is hearing. Highly recommended!

While the month of Adar is still more than twelve weeks away, Amram Adar is set to debut in the Jewish music scene in time for Chanukah with a 12 song album titled Baruch Hashem.

A Miami native, Adar has been singing for most of his life, and his carefully trained voice is both eloquent and spectacular. It is clear why veteran producer Yochi Briskman signed on to work with Adar, on this album which was eighteen months in the making. While Adar’s name may be new to many, he has been making his mark in the cantorial and philharmonic world for years.

Baruch Hashem features a tantalizing array of music in all genres: from Yiddish to Hebrew, from Chasidic to horas and including a breathtaking cantorial selection, Adar’s sweet voice shines in every genre. A relative newbie to the the world of Chasidic musc, Adar teamed up with many of the biggest talents in the business, in addition to some lesser known names, to create this strikingly unique album. With compositions by Yitzy Waldner, Yochanan Shapiro, Yoni Eliav, Dr. Mordechai Sobol, and Adar himself and arrangements by Mona Rosenblum, Moshe Laufer, Ian Freitor, Ofir Sobol Yanky Briskman, Dr. Mordechai Sobol and Yoni Eliav there is an impressive array of quality material, coaxed to perfection by a team of experts. Choirs by Moshe Roth Yossi Greenbaum, Ofir Sobol and Yoely Horowitz of the Shira choir lend an extra touch to the album and under Yochi

Briskman’s careful guidance, both Baruch Hashem and Adar himself are sure to make their mark in the Jewish music world in a very big way. Baruch Hashem is being distributed by Aderet Music and is due in stores on December 11th. It will be available on CD and Digital Download.

Stay tuned for a first taste of Adar with the release of an exciting music video debuting next week. Be the first to see the new video by LIKING Adar on Facebook here.

This is an exciting wedding album produced by Sheya Mendlowitz and arranged by Suki Berry. Music was played by the Freilach Orchestra with clarinet solos by Chilik Frank. It is not your typical wedding album. The theme is to bridge the gap between the “Alter Heim” and the music of today. Suki is a master of collections from all sources across the Jewish music spectrum and he shines with some original combinations. The singers are the Mezamrim choir and the Moishy Kraus boys choir along with solos from MBD, Lipa Schmeltzer, Dovid Gabay, Shloime Gertner, and Shalom Jacobs.

The opening medley starts with Od Yishoma – the famous one and it reminded me of Suki with a Touch of Ding from the 70′s and then I realized it was because it had the clarinet solo – this time by Chilik Frank - not Yehuda Spinner. It then continues with a combination of old and recent Chassidishe nigunim and contemporary yeshivishe compositions. My defining moment of the album is when the Mezamrim sing Boruch Levine’s Ovinu Malkeinu Galei – as Uvini Malkeini Galei and the next time around the kids sing it regular and then they sing together with both accents. This symbolizes how even in today’s times we can still find aidele niginim. To quote Suki on the album cover: “Yes, our song bursts forth with a renewal, vibrant and youthful spirit, yet we strive to remain firmly rooted in the secure and age old footsteps of our legacy.”

The hit from the album is Anah Avda sung by Dovid Gabay. It is very hard for me to describe the style from the song. This might be the genius of the “Berry Bunch” . It has a modern flavor with power and is sung with the Sephardishe accent, but I can’t help but feel a haimishe taam with the song.

There are several chupa songs with different flavors: featuring MBD singing his Mame Ruchel from his double album as Mi Adir wth a Yiddish high part composd by Lipa and Shloime Gertner singing B’ein Malitz Yosher from his native London Pirchei.

The rest of the album features marches, a slow Yiddish song by Lipa, and the closing medley again featuring a combination of different styles: Yeshivish, Chabad, Satmar, MBD, Moshe Laufer, and Seret Vizhnitz.

The last 2 songs seem to be like a “Suki signature” because they were both on Suki and a touch of Ding – Chaim Shtehay on Volume 2 and Vosik on Volume 1. The reason I think this way because he tends to do that on previous albums he arranged. For example signing off with the intro. to MBD’s Vechol Maaminim or ” a gantz yur freilich” . The most recent one was on the first Shira Chadasha Boy’s Choir on the last song – Kol Mi.

Beri Weber’s new album, Thank You Hashem, is due to hit store shelves very shortly. With eleven songs composed by Lipa Schmeltzer, Pinky Weber, Pinny Ostreicher, David Kaufman, Yoely Dikman and Beri himself and arrangements by Moshe Laufer, Yoely Dikman, Naftali Schnitzler, Ruli Ezrachi and Pinny Ostreicher, producer Naftali Schnitzler says that this album will have a different feel than Beri’s last album.

“There will be a much bigger variety of styles on this album, appealing to a much wider audience,” Shnitzler told Jewish Music Report. “There is some very exciting music here, styles that I personally think ‘chasidic music’ hasn’t heard yet.”

Also featured on this album will be guest singers Pinny Ostreicher, Moshe Roth and Moishe Krausz with additional vocals by the Yoely Horowitz choir.

So this is it. The “King of Jewish Music” and his last album – Kissufim. I don’t think any of us expected it to be like this – not the singer of Moshiach, Maaminim and Just One Shabbos! – but in the end, it’s up to the artist to go where he wants. And in this case, R’ Mordechai chose to end his career with an austere, laid back, heimishe product rather than a hit-heavy, modern, pop album.

I think the name is well chosen. Some of MBD’s all-time greatest moments are on his slower, most hartzig numbers. The title of the album shows where he has been at emotionally, and what he was always trying to drive spiritually. In interviews, he has said that this album was one that he wanted to put out for a while, but for the life of me, I don’t understand exactly what he was pointing at. This album is very similar to Kumzits, albeit with a more Heimishe feel. It also has a few modern pop tunes tossed in, seemingly for the younger crowd. It also has niggunim, but he’s produced many albums with niggunim. As for the heimishe tunes; well, he’s had dozens of heimeishe tunes on previous albums as well. Maybe someone can enlighten me on what is so utterly unique about this that he saved it for last.

In any case, it’s a nice album, even if the end product is a bit surprising. Here we go, song by song:

Shulem Aleichem: The barebones arrangement here, with a guitar accompanied by accordion alongside men’s and boys’ choirs, reminds me of the ancient London School of Jewish Song album (yeah, the one with Yekum Purkan on it). That itself was a shock. But this very hemishe tune is one with a strongly Galicianer Chassidic feel, and as a result, I’m sure you’ll hear quite it a bit Friday nights in Boro Park and Williamsburg. I’m surprised he opened the album with this song –a completely atypical beginning for a modern album.

Menichu Vesimchu: The arrangements on this number echoes the first, with the percussion providing shades of Veshulmu, from Efshar Letaken. This tune is also one that will probably appeal to Zemiros singers – simple, elegant and hartzig. A bit more arrangement would have been nice – maybe some harder piano would have given it a bit more definition. As for vocals, Mordche goes Shlomo-like with the humming harmonies towards the end of the song, adding to the appeal. However, as the next song stays slow, I think they should have really picked up the pace towards the end.

Al Kein Tzion: The intro to the song is jolting, and doesn’t really speak to me, but the song itself is very beautiful. The child soloist does solid work, as does the Shira Choir with the backup vocals. The arrangements have a bit more oomph than the previous two songs, with the presence of a violin and piano. And MBD does some of his patented emotional harmonies. But the flow of the album just hasn’t quite established itself yet. For that, we’re just going to have to wait for the next song, one of the guaranteed hits on the album.

Shomrei: In absolute contrast to the three earlier tunes, this song has a funky musical and vocal intro. The electric guitar and solid beat energize you, and MBD’s voice sounds as close to his prime as it has in a while. The colorful solo smack in the middle gives it an additional boost; along with some awesome harmonics all the way through. And I love the ending. But let’s face it – it seems that this song was a compromise for the younger set. That being said, it’s probably going to be everyone’s favorite song of the album.

Hazkiri: It seems that with each song, they’ve added something to the basic guitar-led arrangements. Here, we have a mandolin leading the way, on another slow piece. You can easily see MBD shuckeling his way through this nigun, written by the holy R’ Yisrael of Ruzhin, and he sings it with gusto, as befits a nigun of this stature.

Talmidei HaTzemach Tzedek: Here’s where we get into my favorite section of the album, but maybe I’m just biased, given that the next three songs of Chabad niggunim. This gorgeous and rare nigun is usually sung slowly, but MBD and the boys put on a good show with a faster pace. Here’s an example of a song matching the arrangement exceedingly well, especially a nigun – where the intended focus of the tune in the first place was on the vocals. Still, the ending comes a bit too quickly for me, leaving me pining for a little more.

Anim Zemiros: The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught this gentle nigun to Chassidim himself, on a Simchas Torah evening back in the 60’s. It has a rather lengthy back-story, which is something for a different time. The crux of the story is that as a heavenly reward for an extraordinary act of kindness, a Jew spent an entire Yom Kippur immersed in this tune – meriting a taste of Gan Eden while still in this world. Put in the very able hands of Mordechai ben David and the Shira Choir, alongside a very elegant arrangement, this song is performed to virtual musical perfection.

Chabad Tantz: While Avraham Fried had performed this tune on Hupp Cossack, here it has much more power. It’s sung here as fast as it typically is in shuls, where it is often sung to the words of Lecha Dodi. This also is one of the few songs on the album that has merited a more expanded arrangement – done stylishly and thoughtfully. Great job.

Hashivaini: Here we go right back – in style and in form – to Hazkiri. This nigun was composed by R’ Pinchas Friedman of Belz – presumably an einikel of the Ruzhiner. Anyone know if I’m correct on that? Whatever the case, the similarity of the nigunim and arrangement takes away from the solid performance. Oh well.

Nichsefo: A pop piece that could have used a few rewrites. The tune is overly simplistic, and the words don’t really fit the message. Hey, if you were going through the experience of klos hanefesh, where your soul is trying to break free of your body to cleave to Hashem, would you be singing this? But vocally, MBD does his best, and as always, succeeds to strengthen one of his weaker ones.

Kissifim: Oht azoy! MBD’s true final musical message, (albeit via Lipa’s verbal and poetic skills) with this pretty, poignant and sensible Yiddish song about our desire to serve Hashem despite the struggles. I only wish he had put out an English song to match.

Simchas Torah Medley: Back we go to the classic Jewish pop arrangement style of the Chabad Tantz. Nice choice of tunes for this happy-go-lucky medley. MBD, however makes only rare appearances on this track – and no solos.

Werdyger Medley: Another Ani Maamin for MBD?! I’d have nixed that first choice for this medley. In any case, the child soloist bends the notes a few times too many, in both this and the next song – Yiboneh. This whole medley would have fit nicely on an album in the 80’s, but it’s only a feeble match for this album.

Ashreini: And finally, a solid, classy number for MBD’s finale. This song retains the guitar-centric accompaniment of the entire album, but with much more snazz than the rest of the album. Extra-solid percussion lift it above for a totally enjoyable and highly catchy hit.

Tachlis: All in all, while Kissufim is certainly not MBD’s best album,* it’s still a beautiful album. The Shira Choir does an excellent job, with graceful harmonies that accent MBD’s voice very well. I would have played with the order of songs a bit, to give it a bit better flow. An additional critique is in terms of his stage time versus the Shira Choir. I understand that they got top billing alongside him, but the fact remains that this is an MBD album! I think we would have liked to hear a little more Mordche. If you loved Kumzits, chances are that you’ll love Kissufim as well. The King deserves your patronage: grab your copy of his final album today!

*We’ll discuss MBD’s best album in an upcoming post, G-d willing. I still need to buy a few more of his albums before I write it.

A new CD entitled “Oisiyois Hanegina” was released this week in time for Sukkos.

The CD contains a selection of Chabad Niggunim, such as Nigun Fonke, Nigun Simcha, Nigun Reb Meir Shlomo Yanovsky, and others.

The CD was produced by Yisroel Cyprys, with vocals by Yosef Silberstein.

Although there are already a number of such albums available, Cyprys explains why this new production stands out. “In addition to the attention obviously given to the music, that it should be pleasing and well produced, particular attention is given to the nigun itself, so that it is presented with its soulfulness and beauty uncompromised.”

Also included is a 12 page booklet with the background of each nigun.

“Oisiyois Hanegina” is available in Crown Heights Judaica stores. For more info call 347-684-1931, email chabadnigunim@gmail.com or go to www.ChabadNigunim.com.

New York, NY – While much of current Jewish music seems to be incorporating many of the trends and techniques of today’s secular music, one of the biggest names in the Jewish music business is bringing back old school Jewish music with an album that fuses the feel of yesteryear withtoday’s rigorous musical standards.

Sheya Mendlowitz, the man behind the HASC concert series, the Lipa Schmelczer mega-concert known as The Event, as well as numerous albums and other full scale productions, has resurrected some of the best loved songs in the annals of Jewish music and brought them to life with an all star team of musical talent, in an album titled Big Time Alter Heim – Then and Now.

“I have been wanting to do this for a long time,” Mendlowitz told VIN News. “The idea was to bring back the hits that many of us grew up with, good material that has been around for a few hundred years up until now. So much of the current music doesn’t sound like what I know Jewish music to be and I wanted to bring that back.”

Big Time Alter Heim features the voices of Mordechai Ben David, Lipa Schmelczer, Dovid Gabay, Shloime Gertner and the Mezamrim Choir, accompanied by acclaimed Israeli clarinetist Chilik Frank and the Freilach Orchestra. Produced and directed by Mendlowitz, with the assistance of associate producer Benny Taubenfeld of Sameach Music and arrangements by Suki Berry, the album features wedding, dance and march medleys and chupah selections, among others.

Big Time Alter Heim made its official debut this morning on Nachum Segal’s JM in the AM distributor Sameach Music reports that the album will be available in stores today.

Mendlowitz told VIN News to expect another musical surprise related to this album sometime next week.
